Avoid Bringing Pests Inside.
There’s nothing quite as comforting as a crackling fire on a cold winter evening. Especially after the power goes out.
Wood stored outside often contains overwintering insects like beetles, wood wasp and yellow jackets. Let these warm up inside for a while and you may be visited by confused insects roused from winter slumber.
Your main wood pile should be kept well away from the house to discourage rodent and insect activity throughout the year.
As you bring wood to the house you should bring only a 1 or 2 day supply and keep it outside until you are ready to put it on the fire.
This way you can avoid having uninvited guests, at least those of the insect variety.
