Unlike your car, your home probably didn’t come with an owners manual. So, unless they fail, most appliances don’t get the maintenance they deserve.
One of the most overlooked items is the heating system and the most ignored item in the heating system is the air filter.
You wont just get poor economy from a dirty filter, you are actually breathing the crud coming out of that thing. I’ve been in hundreds of homes where the homeowner couldn’t remember ever changing their filter.
Without proper service a heating system can become a reservoir for dust mites and carpet beetles. If your home is not rodent proof it may also harbor rodents and their droppings. Many sinus and respiratory conditions can be aggravated by these contaminants.
Most furnaces are fitted with a filter that can be purchased for as little as $1.00. These filters should be changed monthly. High end filters run about $20.00 but can survive up to 3 months and washable filters can last for a couple of years but need to be washed monthly.
Even if you don’t have a central air conditioner you aren’t off the hook. Wall heaters have to be vacuumed out annually, which usually requires the grill to be removed.
If your home is old enough to have electric baseboard heat these need to be vacuumed out annually also.
If you are not familiar with the maintenance cycle for your heating system or you don’t have an owners manual, a few minutes with a heating contractor can help you breath easier and save you some money in the long run.
